The Careers Inspiration team was given the opportunity to work alongside some amazing Year 11 students from Redborne Upper School. This entailed a morning of fun, engaging activities that increased the students’ motivation, improved self-esteem and helped them overcome personal barriers by building their confidence.

We were fortunate enough to be joined by a range of employers/providers on the day, who all gave up valuable time to join us at Redborne Upper School. They included The Army, Center Parcs, Willmott Dixon, Merry Poppets, YMCA, Airlander (Engineering), Bedford College, The Institute of Civil Engineers, and Shuttleworth College.
The group of employers/providers gave the students an insight into the wide range of different career options available within these diverse organisations and the invaluable opportunity to practise their interview techniques with real employers. Every student took part in the interview activity – where they had 10 minutes with each employer. This not only gave students the opportunity to question employers about their industries; each employer asked every student some of the questions that could be expected within a real interview situation.
“A great event today. Engaging with young people is always personally rewarding, but we also found two young people who could do really well in our industry and have offered them work experience. These kind of events with schools are the best way to get the message out there about the opportunities in our industry for all kinds of people and to attract the best candidates for the future” – Stephanie Hensman – Wilmott Dixon
“I enjoyed the event and the direct contact with the students. The students were all “on the ball”, they asked appropriate questions and listened carefully to the answers. I do not often have the opportunity to talk to young people and spread the voice about YMCA, our mission and the way we accomplish it. I believe it is good for us to be out there and get as much contact as possible, particularly with students who are going through the process of making choices for their future” – Chiara Santamaria – YMCA Bedfordshire
“It was great to see the professional approach the students took when meeting us, and the range of questions asked to understand the diversity of jobs and career options that are available at Center Parcs Woburn Forest” – Katie Maslin & Lianne Relfe – Woburn Forest Center Parcs
“Thank you for inviting me to the Speed Interview event at Redborne Upper School – it was a really great opportunity to meet the students, help them practice their interview skills and tell them a little bit about a career in engineering. The students were all well prepared, polite and engaged- they are a credit to the school”– Glen Owen – Institute of Civil Engineers
Comment from Careers Advisor at Redborne School
“A huge thank you. What a brilliant morning – it went so well, the students engaged and were receptive and the employers created a buzz!” – Katrina Armstrong – Careers Advisor
Feedback from students:
“I enjoyed talking to people about their careers”
“I will ask for more support with my interview skills”
“I realise I need more support with the choices I want to make after school”
“I liked getting the feedback from the different employers”
“I would like work experience with some of these employers”
By the end of the session, the students in the group presented themselves differently from the beginning. Throughout the morning every effort had been made to raise the students’ level of self-belief and assist them in taking the first steps into the period of transition between school and their future training/employment. The interactive sessions were enjoyed by all of them and built self-confidence and knowledge.
