Every year, JS Media host a number of Jobs Shows nationally (including London and Milton Keynes) and typically national organisations are offered an opportunity to provide targeted 1:1 careers advice and career-related workshops. Develop were recommend by Jobcentre Plus to JS Media and were asked to participate by providing tailored careers information, advice and guidance to the adults attending the event. The event in January 2018 was such a success that we have been asked back to once again give careers advice to the local community at the next Job Show in September 2018.
Last time we had ‘Hot Desks’, where Develop qualified careers staff could confidentially meet individuals who wanted careers support. Attendees to the Job Show were encouraged to come and meet one of the Develop team to support a range of needs including:
- CV support
- Career direction
- Information on local Labour Market Information
- Interview Skills
It was not long before all appointment slots were fully booked with people seeking help with their career management and employment skills. Due to this high demand, it was necessary for ad hoc sessions to be set up, which meant Develop advisers supported almost double the amount of clients we initially thought we would cater for.
Develop’s qualified staff went through and gave advice, amended people’s CVs, gave advice on their next employment options, amended people’s CVs and gave interview support for those people who are due an interview in the coming weeks.
As well as talking to the clients on an individual basis, two of our Level 6 qualified IAG adviser faciliated open workshops in:
- How to write an effective CV
- Interview Skills
- Assessment Centres
The workshops were delivered in an informal and fun way, encouraging all those in attendance to participate with their experiences. These were informative and interesting sessions and our adviser was often seen giving advice at the end of these sessions as well.
Of particular interest was the workshop on Assessment Centres, how they operate and their purpose. Not many adults were aware of these and how they are used to aid the selection and recruitment of potential employees.
This was a truly dynamic event which was interesting and challenging for those involved in delivery. The needs of the local community were met with clear and appropriate advice for the individual needs of the clients, and with the workshops for a wider audience who were able to participate.
Meet us again in September for your 1:1 Tailored Careers Advice & Guidance!
